Is Your HVAC Haunting Your House? 5 Common HVAC Problems
You might hear some spooky noises in your home this Halloween season. Creaks and soft banging sounds you’ve never heard before. Could it be ghosts?
More than likely, these sounds are coming from your HVAC system. It’s one of the biggest concerns we hear from homeowners. Here are 5 other common HVAC problems and how to fix them:
1. Cold Spots
If you’ve seen The Sixth Sense, then you know that cold spots mean there are invisible dead people around. Or: They could mean that your vents aren’t open in that room or you have an air leak.
You can correct cold spots by checking to make sure that your vents are open and that they’re not blocked by furniture. You may also check the windows and doors nearest the cold spot to see if the chilly air from outside is getting into your home through small cracks in the caulking or the weather stripping.
2. Musty Air
You might get the sensation that you can’t breathe or smell an ever-lingering foul odor. Before you start questioning what violent events might have taken place in your home before you owned it, consider instead that your home might just be suffering from poor indoor air quality.
You can clear out your home of musty air by:
- Opening the windows on mild days.
- Changing out your AC filter.
- Breaking up with scented candles and sprays.
- Cleaning your carpets and upholstery.
3. Tripped Breakers
The poorly rated film White Noise, starring Michael Keaton, taught us that spirits communicate with us through technology. So, when your HVAC unit turns off on its own accord—could it be a message from the other side?!
Nope, it’s just a tripped breaker or a blown fuse.
Keep your HVAC running smoothly and consistently by having your fuse box or electrical panel repaired or replaced, as needed.
4. Neglected HVAC Unit
Usually, at the end of a horror film, especially one involving ghosts, you learn that the protagonist is being haunted for a reason. They’re somehow connected to the undead! What sins have they committed?
In your case, your HVAC unit could be haunting you because you’ve been neglecting it. Did you know you should have your unit inspected by a professional every year? This inspection will let them know what maintenance services your unit needs, which could save you a lot of money—and your unit a lot of heartache—in the long run.
5. Deceased HVAC Unit
Sometimes it’s too late for your unit. You waited too long to take care of it when it was sick, and it needed you. Or, your HVAC system could simply have died from old age. Units don’t usually last longer than 10 years. It might have just been its time to go.
Help your HVAC unit pass peacefully by having it removed by a professional technician and replaced (respectfully) by a new, more energy-efficient unit.
