5 New Year’s Resolutions for Your HVAC System

New Year’s Resolutions for Your HVAC System

When it comes to home improvement, it can be easy to let your HVAC system fall to the bottom of the to-do list. While keeping up with your HVAC maintenance might not be as glamorous as updating kitchen counter tops or repainting the walls, it is one of the most important components of your home.

Protect your investment by resolving to take better care of your HVAC system this year. Here are five New Year’s Resolutions for your HVAC system from our team at Blue Flame.

1. Change your filter regularly.

It can be easy to forget about changing your air filter on a regular basis. But this can let dust, pollen, bacteria, and other airborne particles build up inside your ductwork and end up in your air (and lungs). It can also stifle the air flow in your ducts and harm your HVAC system’s overall efficiency.

We recommend changing your air filter at least once every 90 days. In homes with lots of pet hair, dust, or smoke, change it every 30 days. If you need some extra help remembering to change your air filter on time, here are some ideas.

2. Schedule spring maintenance for your AC.

Your AC works its hardest during the hot summer months. To help prepare it for the season, schedule an AC tune-up in the spring. A technician will clean and lubricate all of the parts inside of your HVAC unit and identify potential problems before they become expensive repairs later. If you make the time for AC maintenance in the spring, you will thank yourself in the summer when you don’t have to wilt in the heat waiting for repairs.

3. Schedule fall maintenance for your furnace.

The same logic applies for your furnace. We experience serious winter weather in Washington, and your furnace has a tough job keeping your home warm. Schedule fall maintenance to make sure your furnace doesn’t break down on a cold winter day.

Tune-ups also ensure that your HVAC system is working as efficiently as it possibly can, saving you money on energy costs. Most HVAC manufacturers require annual maintenance, and they will void the warranty on your system if you skip it.

4. Clean your air ducts.

In order to cut back on dust and other airborne particles that settle inside your ductwork, clean out your air ducts once or twice per year. You can hire a professional HVAC company to clean your ducts, or you can try DIY air duct cleaning.

5. Keep up with landscaping around your outdoor unit.

If debris is falling inside or on top of your HVAC unit, it can harm efficiency and even damage interior parts. Make sure to keep any trees, bushes, or grass around your outdoor unit neatly trimmed. Clear debris off of your unit during the spring and fall. Make sure nothing is blocking the airflow coming in and out of your HVAC system or you will sacrifice efficiency.

Stick to these New Year’s Resolutions for your HVAC system and you will keep it at peak efficiency all year long!

Your HVAC system is an investment, so treat it with the care it needs. A well-maintained system can last for over a decade keeping your home comfortable.
