DIY Air Duct Maintenance
If you have ever wielded a feather duster and set to work making surfaces shiny, you know how quickly and easily dust can accumulate in a home. Therefore, you can only imagine how much dust can pile up quickly inside your home’s air ducts!
Professional air duct cleaning can be a great option for reducing dust and airborne allergens in your home and alleviate symptoms for family member with asthma and allergies. But this service can be expensive. What can you do to keep your air ducts as clean as possible between professional service appointments?
At Blue Flame, we have plenty of experience cleaning out air ducts. Here are some tips and tricks for DIY air duct maintenance for your home.
To clean out your air ducts thoroughly, you need to assemble these tools:
- Vacuum Cleaner with Hose
- Dust Brush for Vacuum
- Microfiber Cloths
- Dryer Vent Brush Cleaner
- Cordless Drill
- Paper Towels
Step 1: Prep Work
Remove registers by lifting them up off the floor or unscrewing them with a cordless drill. Wash them in hot water with soap and dry them thoroughly with paper towels. You may want to complete this process one at a time as you clean the vents in different parts of your home. When you select a vent to start cleaning, make sure to cover up the other registers by wrapping them in paper towels. This keeps dislodged dust from blowing into the rooms of your home.
Step 2: Loosening Dust
To make it easier to suction the dust out of your ductwork, you first need to loosen it up. You can accomplish this by knocking on the sides of ductwork. But a more creative and effective method requires a little extra ingenuity. Take your dryer vent brush and attach it securely to the end of your cordless drill. Turn the drill on at its slowest setting and use it to whip the brush around inside the air duct. Move this contraption in a spiral down into the duct as far as it can go, and then spiral it back upward. Turn the drill off before you completely remove the brush so that it won’t fling dust all over you and your home on its way out.
Step 3: Cleaning Out the Ducts
This is the easiest part of the DIY air duct maintenance process. Use your vacuum hose and suction the dust out of your air ducts. After you are satisfied with the dust removal, vacuum off your dryer vent brush too.
Step 4: Wipe Down
Now that the majority of the dust and grime has been removed, take care of any stubborn particles still stuck to the walls. Dampen a microfiber cloth and use it to wipe off the interior walls of the ductwork as much as you can.
After you’ve finished these steps for each opening to your ductwork, screw your registers back into place and enjoy your clean ducts!
